My godmother/aunt, Ita Marie Breslin, crocheted ever since I can remember. She never used patterns, she just saw in her mind what she wanted and set to work. The gold hat is one she made for my mother years ago. Wednesday, 7 October 2009, 'Aunt' Ita left us and crossed over to eternity.


In the past couple of nights since learning this, I sat down and reconstructed the hat as a tribute to her ability, crafting and love.

So I present Breslin's Beret orginally designed by Ita M. Breslin in the 70's




Worsted weight yarn
size I hook

ch = chain
sc = sc crochet
ss = slip stitch

Cluster Stitch: *Yarn over hook, through stitch, yarn over and pull thru* Repeat between ** once. Yarn over through all loops on hook, chain 1.

Do not join between rounds

Work rounds 1 through 12 in back loops only.

Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
Round 3: *1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next,* 6 times (18 sc)
Round 4: *1 sc in each of next 2 stitch, 2 sc in next,* 6 times (24 sc)
Round 5: *1 sc in each of next 3 stitch, 2 sc in next,* 6 times (30 sc)
Round 6: *1 sc in each of next 4 stitch, 2 sc in next,* 6 times (36 sc)
Round 7: *1 sc in each of next 5 stitch, 2 sc in next,* 6 times (42 sc)
Round 8: *1 sc in each of next 6 stitch, 2 sc in next* 6 times (48 sc)
Round 9: *1 sc in each of next 7 stitch, 2 sc in next* 6 times (54 sc)
Round 10: *1 sc in each of next 8 stitch, 2 sc in next* 6 times (60 sc)
Round 11: *1 sc in each stitch around (60 sc)
Round 12: *1 cluster in each stitch around (60 clusters)
Round 13-22: *1 cluster in each chain 1 around around (60 clusters)
Round 23: *1 sc in each chain 1 around (60 sc)
Rounds 24-28: *1 sc in each stitch around (60 sc)

Slipstitch in next stitch, end off. Weave in ends.
